A meeting of the FIGC general assembly has been called for December 14: Among the items on the agenda is the election of a new President of the Italian FA and Giovanni Malagò is likely to be the only candidate in the running.

Malagò was originally elected as President of the Italian FA (FIGC) in June following the resignation of his predecessor Gabriele Gravina in the wake of Italy’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

Technically, Malagò’s first term as President of the FIGC has already come to an end, as he was forced to step down due to an administrative technicality.

It was proved that Malagò was not a registered member of the FIGC at the time of his election earlier this year, which should have made him ineligible to run for the Presidency.

Malagò had previously served as the President of the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI), which is responsible for overseeing all professional sporting activity in Italy, including football.

Due to the fact that Malagò was technically ineligible to run for the FIGC Presidency, the federation was placed under the control of a special commissioner. After settling a dispute with current CONI President Luciano Buonfiglio, a compromise was reached for Malagò to serve as the commissioner himself , allowing him to keep control of the football association until the next Presidential election.

The FIGC has confirmed on Friday that a meeting of the FIGC general assembly has been called for December 14 and that the election of a new President is among the topics on the agenda.

According to various reports over the last few weeks, Malagò is likely to be the only candidate in the running.
