  • Overview: Cape Verde, Curacao, Jordan and Uzbekistan all made their World Cup debuts in 2026, with Cape Verde going further than any of them by reaching the knockout rounds....

The expanded 48-team World Cup was designed to open doors, and in 2026 four nations walked through one for the very first time. Cape Verde, Curacao, Jordan and Uzbekistan each made their FIFA World Cup debuts, the largest intake of first-timers since six nations debuted in 2006. None of the four arrived as tourists, and one of them, remarkably, went further than traditional powers who packed their bags early.

Curacao carried the most romantic story of the four. With a population of around 150,000, the Caribbean island became the smallest nation by population ever to reach a men's World Cup, taking the record from Iceland. Their squad blended locally developed players with talent from the Dutch diaspora, a model emerging football countries increasingly lean on. They drew one and lost two of their group games, but simply being there was the triumph of a generation.

Cape Verde were the revelation of the tournament. The Atlantic archipelago of roughly 525,000 people topped a tough African qualifying group that included Cameroon, then drew all three of their group games in North America, including a goalless draw with Spain. Finishing second in Group H unbeaten, they became the smallest country ever to reach the World Cup knockout stages, before Argentina ended their run in the round of 32. Three draws, zero defeats in the group, history made.

Uzbekistan's breakthrough ended one of international football's longest waits. The first Central Asian nation to reach a men's World Cup, the White Wolves qualified at their eighth attempt, having chased a place since gaining FIFA membership in 1994 after the break-up of the Soviet Union. Years of painful near-misses finally ended thanks to a strong campaign and Asia's expanded allocation of eight direct places. They lost all three group games, but three decades of hurt were washed away in the celebrations.

Jordan's rise reflected Asian football's growing depth. Fresh from their impressive run to the AFC Asian Cup final, Jordan sealed their maiden berth and joined Argentina, Algeria and Austria in Group J. Like Uzbekistan they lost all three matches and found scoring a struggle, but qualification through the traditional route, rather than as hosts, announced them as a program on an upward curve instead of a one-tournament wonder.

Between them the four debutants scored six group-stage goals and conceded well over twenty, and only Cape Verde advanced, proof that the step up remains brutal. But their presence told a bigger story about football's shifting map: diaspora talent, better infrastructure and stronger domestic leagues are narrowing gaps that once looked permanent. It happened in the same cycle that Italy's men learned in the play-offs how cruel the margins can be, while Italy's women now chase their own World Cup dream at Brazil 2027.
